Bikes Available for Amageza Rallye
« on: February 04, 2016, 02:58:40 pm »
Since I'm out of rallying for a while, I thought to made some bikes avail for rental.  Bikes are in Upington and I'll manage the rentals through our Touring Bike rental company.

KTM 690R
Has done 3 Amagezas
Fully equipped for cross country rally
RR UK Rally Kit
3 tanks, nav tower and low fairing
Water carrier bash plate
Spare Rear wheel avail if you think you will kill a rear tire on day one
Twin ICO set-up with CAP/speed/distance
e-Trex 10 mount and GPS
F2R Roadbook
Front Tubliss/ rear HD tube
Steering damper
Sort-of comfort seat (seat concepts)

Bike is pretty high and set-up for a 90- 100 kg rider.

You send me the tires of your choice and I will fit it.

Rental R6500 for the Baja.  Pick-up and drop-off in Upington unless otherwise arranged.

CRF450X

Rally lite
IMS Long range tank. Capacity enough for Baja
Spare wheels available
No GPS holder or GPS.
HD Tubes both sides

You send me the tires of your choice and I will fit it.

Rental R4500 for the Baja.  Slightly more chance that I will need to do a top-end afterwards, hence the pricing. Pick-up and drop-off in Upington unless otherwise arranged.

General

No First Aid Kits included in the price
No survival equipment
No personal kit such as camelbacs
No radios/trackers/gps only where indicated.

A hold will be put on on your credit card to recover damage.  I have not fully considered the size of the deposit, as it sort of depends on how well I know you, etc.

I will prefer that the person who wants to use the 690 to either have one; is used to using large bikes off road or is willing to come to Upington to try the bike in advance, it is a big old beast.

Very much so  :thumleft:

At least two people are now out of "it costs too much to prepare a bike for this" excuses.

Yes Ian, the idea is that the bikes get used for what they were built/designed for.  Hopefully gets more guys into long distance racing.

Saw that, and while I wont necessarily say no to money, the idea is to give somebody the chance of doing this without breaking the bank.  Rallying has created new horizons to my bike riding world, I want someone else to experience it.

Wow, renting a bike at these rates will enable you to do the Baja at a fraction of the cost!  :thumleft:

Take my advice; I don't use it anyway.

Sounds way too cheap to me...
Rebuilding the top end after the event on one of the bikes will most likely cost you more...

There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more"

You are right, of course, Mike.  I'm going to do a stainless conversion on the CRF's intakes in any case after the race, so unless the piston gets holed, I'm OK with it.  The 690 is pretty tough, there is always a chance of rocker bearing failure, but that is hardly more likely to happen during a race than on a commute.  Neither will require a filter change after 300km, so I'll be to blame if either sucks sand.

Look, realistically, if a race bike cant do 600 km, then it is pretty crap.

Its to rent a bike, not to buy it  When you think about it, its only 600 km and the pilot pays for the damages caused by his/her lack of riding skill. I'm riding the 690 tomorrow for the 1st time this year...

OK, so I've had some interest.  A couple of questions were repeated:

- No, I don't actually want to make the KTM 300 available.  It only has about 72 km range and I don't really want to buy a long range tank.  It is also a bit of a mission.  I've used it in the Botswana 1000, but there I used my own cans with the correct pre-mix in it.  In the Baja, you will likely need to fill up at a commercial filling station or 2.  A maths error under pressure on 2 stroke ratios will cost me a lot of money.

-  Yes, I can get everything you need if that is what you want. Radio, GPS, medical board, environmental mat, First aid, survival.  I just did not want to.

- I'm not planning on converting the CRF450X into full rallye spec for the Amageza Rallye (not the Baja, not enough time), but I will if there is interest.  It will cost me a lot though, probably what I can rent it for, so I'm not overly keen.  It is a carb model, so it will need to carry much more fuel than the FI KTMs and WRs.

- Yes, the bikes will be available for the other rallyes, but I want to use the 450 at the WCOC rallye and, as above, not really convinced by the maths yet to prep the 450 for the Amageza Rallye.

Feel free to post your questions directly in this thread, I sometimes miss the PMs.

Fitting new sprockets and DID VX2 chain to the Honda. 14/50 should allow a top speed of 155 kph, making for a bit longer legs.  Also new rear brake pads while I'm in the general vicinity.

The KTM should be getting a Mosfet Regulator/Rectifier if I can get it in time.  More reliable and stable electricity supply is the aim.  The Mosfet should also run a bit cooler.  The RR gets repositioned next to the tower from its present position behind the radiator.  Should have a number of benefits.
