I’m on my third XR650L now. Sold first one and immediately regretted it. Eventually bought one again and sold it for no other reason than finding one with a number of upgrades, in particular a bigger tank which I needed (Got tired of riding fuel along in “olie kanne” all the time).
I actually hate any modifications on a motorbike (see, now I have problems) In fact even mucking around with the old stand out brake light on the “L” model and fitting a modern flat version, for me is unnecessary...  In any event
Did (only) about 12k km on both bikes, which were flawless without any issue whatsoever. Now, number 3 only has 3,5k km on the clock but there is an issue.
No problem starting, no problem at half throttle or less, but as soon as you open it up in the higher rev ranges it starts to stutter and “cut out” (for lack of a better description). Perfect again when closing the throttle a bit.
Took it to a much respected specialist who started of where anyone would I suppose i.e. with the jetting, particularly considering that it has an aftermarket pipe (which is pretty open and loud). However no matter how “big” the jetting has gone, the problem persists, so that doesn’t seem to be it.
In may experience over the years many a times a “carburettor issue” turns out to be an electrical issue - except this bike runs and starts perfect until you “gas it” – that doesn’t sound like electrical problems
I’m starting to think (aftermarket) fuel tank issues. When you take of the fuel line, the fuel runs freely but the first owner said that he did have “vapour lock” type issues with the tank initially.
In any event, can anyone perhaps think of any other possible causes? Or perhaps had the same issue…?
Thanks
