For D/S riding, what would you choose;Husky 701 or Yamaha's WR450.

If you could buy a bike new, which would it be, AND WHY?

I'd like to hear from you guys your reasons for choosing which.

I am in the market for a new bike, but the European reliability scares me, even though the Japs does not produce anything like the 690/701. The closest would be a
Yamaha WR450F.

It's not really the answer to your question but I've just finished making up a road legal kit so that I can use my WR250F on the road to where I am going rather than putting it on the truck. It's not really the solution. It's bloody uncomfortable and the motor doesn't really like it.

PS. I fell in love with the Husky on first sight but I'm not sure if it's the answer either.

Again, not really answering your question, but IF you decide on a 701, then waiting for the upgraded model with the updated motor from the 690 Duke would -in my opinion- be worth waiting for.

And there is a fair amount of USEFUL after-market stuff coming down the pipe for this bike, I know Safari are about 2 months away from launching their dual tanks, etc.

Also not useful, but I'm thinking of changing gears completely and getting a 2017 KTM 300, that is one amazing bike!

Those we exactly my choices Dan. The new 2016 WR blew my socks away. I don't think it will eat miles though. The Husky was the first choice, but they seem to be high maintenance on the clutch and head.  Worse even than a 450.

I rode a 701 and it felt very good. I rode the new WR and it WAS very good. Yamaha would get my money at the end of the day. I might not use it for long trips until I got a rear cush hub and decent fuel range.

Does anybody have any real info on when/if this is coming?  It may be more likely now that KTM has discontinued the 690 enduro from their line up as they would only have to build one version of the motor.

I will choose the 701.  Like the idea of the bigger motor and (as I understand it) better long distance road abilities.

Next year's 701 with new engine - rocker arms problem gone, or KTM 500. Unlike roadgoing KTMs (690 and more), the offroad KTMs seem pretty reliable and I havent heard anything catastrophic about them - so I bought one. I'd chose it over Yamaha because of the 6 gears which come handy on long stretches.

Edit: Didn't say why 701: Bigger engine makes for more comfortable cruising (though close ration gearbox negates some of that benefit). And it has longer service intervals - though I do service my 690 after every trip which so far was always somewhat over 3000 km, and I'm sure WR450 (or KTM500) can do that with maybe one oil change thrown in.

We are developing a twin tank set for the KTM690 / Husq701. Not sure of the capacity at this stage however it will be approx.. 15L. We are expecting the tank set will be available in the Nov16 timeframe. We will keep our website posted with progress information.

I would like a lighter bike but would not go for a aingle again,especially if you want to use it as a typical DS bike. With chatter about KTM and Yamaha bringing out a smaller twin, I am scared they are gonna end up being as heavy as a 800GS.
Answer is look after my 990 nicely till the right one comes along . I think something like a SXV Aprilia motor with Jap reliability would be first prize for me.

A bloke just pulled in this afternoon on his Yammie 660.
He has been all over Africa on it and with very little tlc... imho one of the best DS bikes ever made. :thumleft:

Ek sal graag die nuwe WR450 wil ry om te voel hoe hy oop pad hanteer.
Die enigste probleem is daardie afwesigheid van n naafdemper in die agterwiel.
