Is it possible to be 'in love' with a machine?
« on: July 28, 2017, 01:38:40 pm »
So I'm reading this article about bike travel the other day when the idea is raised of riding your bike to a foreign destination and then getting rid of it to overcome the expense of shipping it home.  Now I don't know about you guys but that idea is inconceivable to me...no way I'm abandoning my travel partner somewhere in the sticks...But I know of other adventurers to whom the bike is nothing more than a tool to be used to achieve a dream, nothing more, nothing less....

Having been on the WD forum for some time I would argue that (dare I say it) the majority of us develop this weird 'relationship' with an amalgamation of metal and plastic that could be construed as unnatural, irrational or (to 'normal' human beings - none of us on the forum are normal - or are we?) perhaps borderline crazy.

Do you have a relationship with 'your' machine.......or is it just a bike?

My bike is my pride and my joy and I will not take to it being insulted and and and

but if its not economically viable to take it home after something like a round the world trip then I will probably miss it in the time necessary to replace it.

I don't know about being in love with it, but I certainly bond with and form long relationships with bikes.

I also talk to my bike, the XT600 while out riding.

But only on the XT, on most other bikes things happen too fast for words.

In a way yes. Most bikes are just a want-to-need for me. Some are just great bikes that I enjoy riding so its difficult to get rid of them. Like my 1150 and 1100. While I've had them, I've also gone through 7 other bikes.
...dis nooit te laat om n happy childhood te he nie !

Build a sidecar they said. It will be fun they said. Ja-nee !

I've owned 5 bikes and sold 4 of them.  I've loved them all but so long as they are available in the market I don't get too attached since I know it is replaceable.

The only bike I'm totally in love with and will never part with is my R100S.  Unique, and in my mind, irreplaceable.   I enjoy riding this bike more than I have enjoyed any other.  Totally authentic.

I suppose it might be more about what this bike represents - for me anyway.

I smile every time I look at it.

Yup... it could be true love.
Regards,

Sheldyn
