David Thomas is sitting at no 10 out of the first (last) 100 that has come through! Does everyone have the Dakar 2018 app?

David Thomas did well, showing up 28th, 4 minutes off the leader Sam Sunderland
WDT came in 78th down quite a bit. In his latest vid, he menioned he lost a Wp but went back for it and took it easy. Also mentioned that it was very hard to see the dune crests.
Donovan came in 90th, Im guessing he had a similar story, because he is fast.
Wessel Bosman came in 122th, and Gerry vd Byl came in 135th nearly 55 minutes off the pace. I am guessing he has a story to tell.

Those white dunes of Pisco are really very fine and quite tricky to ride in because the sand is of inconsistent thicknesses.

Here is a FOx video from the DSS, and at 1hr16m you will see the accident of Joaquin Rodrigues #26 He was unconscious and has since woken up in hospital.

Walkner was also nearly taken out by the traffic:

First stage done. I'm glad it finally started. Right at the beginning of the liaison I got quite startled. here in Peru traffic has it's own laws - or none. It is incredibly chaotic. I was very lucky. On the highway a parked car suddenly merged into traffic and a truck had to swerve. Suddenly I was between the truck and the guardrail! I grazed the guardrail with my knee and the truck with my elbow. Just made it. At least at that point I was wide awake. The special was 30k, pretty fast, on sand. I didn't want to take too much of a risk cause the dunes sometimes have extreme edges. altogether I had a good day and had a good start in the rally.

Pablo Quintanilla fb

And we got to pisco! Today was a very short special, between a sea of dunes with very little visibility, but a very good day to start, VOTESAND 3th in the general. Now, preparing for tomorrow's stage, there's a special fort coming into the desert.
Let's go with everything this just started

Dakar Rally 2018: Biker Gerard Farrés ´This will be my last Dakar on a bike´

The charismatic rider Gerard Farrés announces that this 2018 edition will be his last on two wheels, during an emotional event surrounded by his Dakar family. Supported by the full Himoinsa Team, he is eager to put up a good fight in his last participation aboard his KTM. The Manlleu native opens the door to a possible future in the buggy category.

In an emotional act, Farrés, one of the race’s main characters in recent years, has commented about his performance in "the race of a lifetime" and explained the reasons behind his decision: "I have been enjoying and fighting in this race for many years. As I always say, for me it has been more of a lifestyle rather than a race. I have suffered and enjoyed, and the third place we achieved last year was a dream come true, a real reward for my entire professional career. I could not ask for more. I think the end of a cycle has arrived and I have made the decision to stop and enjoy looking back at my success."

Farrés thanked all his teammates and rivals for their affection, and announced his intentions for this 40th edition which is about to begin: "I am very eager to have a great Dakar this year and put a finishing touch to this stage of my professional career and my life. This race has given me everything and I will give it all I’ve got to say goodbye in style. We have prepared very well and we are confident in being able to ride a great Rally. That’s how I want to leave, being competitive and riding well. The whole team is very strong and we have come to put up a fight."

As for his future, he says he wants to remain linked to Dakar and is looking to take some time to think and decide. "At the moment I just want to focus on each stage and fight every day from the start of the rally. Then I’ll rest and consider the future, but I am certain that I do not want to leave this wonderful family, so I’ll look for ways to continue, maybe on a buggy, but I really want to think it through calmly. I really want to continue experiencing new sensations in this race."

#129 Gerry vd Byl from South Africa had this to say from FB:

finished stage 1!!

Riding over the podium this morning was an amazing experience! I don’t know how to explain it! Then riding through Lima with people lining the streets, cheering us on, was quite unreal!

We did a 241 km liaison to get to Pisco. Was really enjoyable, even at 90km/hr! People lining the road all over, waving, smiling, cheering! Then we arrived in the desert! Wow it’s super super hot here! I arrived early, and had to sit in the sun for about 45 minutes!

While waiting, I heard my team mate Jürgen Drößiger crashed into a car during the liaison, and broke his wrist. So he’s out of the Dakar! Just horrible news just before the start.

But then I started the special, and it was off-track dunes for 31km. Not very far, but in the middle of the day, so can’t see the crests of the dunes. Very difficult, but it seems all the training seems to have been worth it!

I got a bit lost, and missed one waypoint, so will be getting a 20 minute penalty. That means I’ll probably start last tomorrow, but I don’t care too much about that! What’s important, is that I made it through day 1, and I feel fantastic!

As it turned out he actually got a 2hr penalty which puts him at the back of the field ! ANyway not to worry - There hopefully will not be too much dust in the dunes so he can pass a lot of people totmorrow and anyway he is on the best outride on the planet. What a blast. Gooo Gerry!

Welsh, yip, over 40 riders missed WP's today, and were peanlised between 10-20 minutes. About half of them got 2 hours for missing a critical WPE.  :lol8:
