Would you believe it.....KTM is leading the bikes after Day 1  :pot:

I read Sam Sunderland is a Brit who lives in UAE to train in the dunes there.  Is this true?

BO, you need to get a bit up to speed. Day 1 was yesterday and we already have top guys in the ASS (french for end of stage) in Day 2. So right now the top overal guy is Honda (Bareda Bort) and second Yamaha (Van Beveren). Watch here: http://trackingdakar.com/en/stage-2/bikes/waypoints/by-overall/

And yes, Sunderland lives and trains in UAE. If you want insides on him Advrider F5 is place to be - his father is participating there (don't remember his acronym there now - I'm sure BB can say what it is).

So far I'm quite surprised how conservative Toby Price rides - I would expect him up front kicking Bam Bam's ass. Maybe the injury last year did play trick on his mind, or maybe he is just bidding his time.

Relax, I am behind.  And thanks for pointing that out. :thumleft:  You're a gem.  I have not found any programming for the race as of yet.  Doing my best to follow along via FB.

I would expect Toby to ride conservative in the beginning considering the thigh injury, it's a long race.

No matter if Honda or Yamaha is leading after day 2, it's a turtle race.  Go KTM  8)

I just posted it in my above post, but here it is again: http://trackingdakar.com/en/stage-2/bikes/waypoints/

It is more user friendly and with richer functionality than official one. That said. if tracking is down on official site, it is usually down even on this one and they use the same data feed - at least that is how it used to be in prior years.

THe best way to follow is advrider firehose thread (but forget about any work for next 2 weeks if you get hooked in): http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/2018-dakar-rally-coverage-a-k-a-firehose-thread.1274635/page-48.

Toby used to attack from day 1 and get podium finishes if my memory serves me, so I'm guessing he is just tentative because of the injury. Also not sure what the pecking order in KTM is given that Sunderland won last year.

I spend as little time on advrider as possible  :lol8:

Thanks for the link.  I can't find any South Africans leading Americans in any class where both countries are represented.   :pot:  That's all I care about  :peepwall: :imaposer: :pot: :pot:

It's early days, but I have to say KTM isn't looking particularly strong so far. Bam Bam has almost 4 and a half minute on third Walkner and over 6 minutes on Sunderland currently at 7th position. And two other Hondas covering his ass between Walkner and Sunderland. BB will be opening tomorrow so if he plays smart he can take it easy, wait for Walkner, sit on his tail and still be in the lead (and of course next day again chase up to the Austrian - provided Walkner wins) getting 2 minutes back. But then Walkner is not exactly an iluminati in things navigation, so BB will have to keep his wits about. Luckily for KTM, BB will probably do the only thing he knows - push hard - and self-destruct in the process.

It looks like this will be long day for Wessel Bosman (I knew he is the Afri Ski guy, but was stil surprised he rides for Lesotho - thought he was RSA guy). The snowball starts building up - hopefully he will be able to deal with it.
