Hey guys..

My 990 Adventure keeps cutting out when I turn left. It's wierd because it happens when I release the clutch and open the throttle. It's also intermittent and doesn't always do it. I got a bit of a fright today coming onto the highway, as soon as I released the clutch she died. The bike starts up straight away and then runs fine...

It's a beautiful bike but it's starting to worry me a bit and I'd like to sort the issue out but I have no idea what's causing it.

Anyway advise please offer...

Could be a harnass plug that is not plugged in properly.
Had a similar thing when my main ignition plug was not seated properly - bike would cut out under hard braking.

If yours is mostly left turn + clutch related, check clutch, neutral and that damned sidestand switches.

Mine did the same a few months ago and after inspection I found a wire in the loom of the ignition which where almost through and by turning left it looses contact.. maybe a possibility to check..

Have you fitted Handlebar Raisers? I noticed that the Wires become a little short after fitting them and turning to the left.

Did you fit handlebar raisers?

I would guess that you will have to thoroughly check all the wiring associated with the ignition switch and cutout switch.

No handle bar rises fitted.

I actually thought it might be a wiring issue. I will have to have a serious look. Just bugging me because everything else runs like clockwork.

I think its quite common for the wiring to the ignition switch to give problems as well as where the harness comes out from the frame front right, from behind the triangular plastic insert. Maybe a good starting point. You could also bybass the side stand and see if that helps.

Under the triple clamp is a bunch of wires that come in,
check there for shorts

is it slow turns (No leaning) or just on faster turns were you lean?
Im scared of dirt

Its a bit of both. Yesterday as I pulled out the parking at work she cut out. Started straight up no issues. Then as soon as I pulled onto the highway and as I rolled off the throttle bang, cut out. Fortunately there were no cars behind me so I pulled into the emergency lane and she started right up again.

This morning every left turn I took no issues. I even tried to force the turn to see and nothing.

Is it possible (maybe it is I must check) that when the previous owner removed his Garmin it might has caused some sort of issue in the wiring?

turns out the positive battery lead had worn alittle (dunno how), Taped it up and shes been good since
Im scared of dirt

Mine did the same thing and it turned out to be the green and orange wire that goes into the tri-angular plastic cover that was corroded at the white connector.

Unfortunately no change. I thought I'd found a loose connection but it was the issue. I've parked her for now been busy with the XRL project. Will take the KTM to Halfdaft this Saturday and see if he can figure it out.
. Been battling with this bike, not a very auspicious start to owning my dream bike.
But hey it's cool to have 990 problems instead of Vespa problems. He he he

take the fuse out of the starter relay under the bike and replace it with new one and also check that the small pins under he plug are not broken had my 950 go US because of this relay,

I would try with the bike running on the center stand, pull and prod all the wires and connectors. Move the handle bars to both extremes and again pull and prod everything. See if you can get it to cut out. That should quickly point you in the correct direction.

You can unfortunately only check the sidestand switch with the bike in gear, depending on how worn my rear wheel is I can sometimes run the bike in gear idling on centerstand. Obviously this can easily end in disaster in a few ways...... Hypothetical,if you could run the bike with the rear wheel off the ground you could then fiddle with sidestand switch and stand to see if it will die. My advice is still to bypass the switch to test.

Ag its so intermittent I'm not going to worry about it. I always want perfection. I put the bike up for sale anyway this morning because I managed to pick up a XRL for a steal. I cant sit with two bikes unfortunately as I don't have a garage, so Ill give the new owner of the KTM a small discount if / when I sell her  so he can go sort the issue out, I'm sure its a small issue like you have all suggested. Until then Ill ride her to the shop and back just to keep the battery alive.

Thanks for all the advise guys, it is appreciated. Seriously thank you.  :thumleft:
