KTM 640adv or Tenere 660?
« on: July 12, 2018, 09:53:38 am »
Hi

I think it may be time to get myself another bike.
As many of you know I had a Dakar (so dont want to get another) I'm keen on a mid size bike, and the only two that really give me that phwoar feeling are the KTM 640 and the Tenere 660

So, which one to go for?
What are the pros and cons?

Gravelfox now doing a trans Africa via the East coast with his XT660Z, I have had 2 they are SOLID bikes. Mine was heavily loaded and used for proper trips (Xpat's bike) and developed a small crack on the frame but honestly apart from that on which is few and far between these bikes have zero mechanical issues. It's get on and go. The only upgrade they need if you start pushing it is a set of Hyperpro springs for the suspension. Never owned a 640 but for sure they will be more high maintenance, well known shop owner told me to stay away. Some vibrate so much the electrical wires short while other have issues with motor bearings. I have ridden one before and can say they handle off road much better than a 660 because of the lower weight and better suspension however I will still choose a 660 any day of the week. Shit now I have Tenere blues, should have never sold them !

HI cloudgazer , The 640 is an awsome bike , good suspension ,long fuel range and looks the part for adv , there are alot of pro's more than cons on that bike, did many tripps with a mate that has one .CONS it vibrates like hell and with the hydrolic clutch can leave you in the learch.BUT don't break it they are shit expensive to fix. The 660 z is awsome aswell, I love everything about the bike, everything is so easy to get to , adjusable suspension , good looks and parts are rather cheeper than most and it runs awsome. On my side the only con is the seat. You stuck in in one place with that dip in the seat, but you can get the aftermarket seat for it.What I like about the XT it has a dry sump oil system.Ride them both and see what fits you better.Iether or they are both good bikes .Only one con on on the KTM they not made anymore since I stand corrected since 2007 , so I think parts are going to be hard to find.

To give you an idea how tough those 660 motors are, my bike rode with an oil pump only working at 10% capacity since someone installed the drive gear the wrong way round. The bike did Namibia, Mozambique and Kalahari trips like this without suffering any breakdown !

There is a reason you still see so many 34L's riding around, The XT660Z will also still be around for a very very long time.

Pity the Z never sold in the numbers the 34L's sold. Would have made the numbers to possibly buy in future so much more.
The 34L was one of my favorite bikes of the few I had. :deal: :thumleft:

660Z - Land Cruiser
640 - Land Rover
 :peepwall:
The best bike of the two would have been the 640 IF it had a Rotax 650 or Yammie 660 engine in. :deal:

The rest of the 640 is perfect. :deal:

Agree the 640 chassis and suspension is much better even if it is an older bike

I will probably only do 3 or 4 trips a year. Nothing hectic.
A weekend away in the cederberg type of thing.
Will use it around town sometimes, but not really for commuting, (got a vespa for that) more for the enjoyment than anything else.

keep the comments coming.

As a huge 640 fan, get the 660. I used to read your reports (you used to write reports  ;) ) and it will suit you best out of the two options

LOL, thanks.

Its a battle between what I want and what I need.
I KNOW the 660 is probably the better choice for me... but damn I've always loved that 640.

It's such a tough call.

I agree, I don't think you will enjoy the tar road bits.
On gravel it is awesome though.

That said, when I bought it new it had Metzeler tyres, quite road-based. It was amazing in mountain passes!

Hi Cloud, long time!

I too reckon the 660Z; I have ridden a KTM 640 when I still owned my Dakkie (and you had yours), and the 640 really does have vibrations of note, whilst being a VERY competent bike!

things to consider:
1. the new Tenere should be introduced to SA around Mar/April 2019, which MIGHT 'soften' the prices of existing 2nd hand model, or it may not!
2. like many here, I reckon the 660Z will be more affordable to maintain than a 640... (i too like the 640 look/feel, the original adventure bike?!)
3. I have hired a few 660 R's for my staff, for trips away, and I think it is an underrated bike, which often sells at a significant discount - bigger than the new-price-differential of the two bikes when sold together - and other than needing say 5L fuel bladder, is an under-rated bike.

Cheers, Chris
