Well, our 2017 ride was an odd one indeed due to all kindsa drama ... so the 2018 ride had a lot to live up to ... and it did.

Believe me I know very little about drone shots, the first clip on this first vid was the 8th time I had ever flown it ... the near misses was by no means intentional ... a stunning lack of ability combined with some good luck is all. For 6 years Iíve used an editing software called Wondershare Filmora, perfect for me and that luckily enables lots of 3 second shots with music and text. More to come ...

The 2017 ride plan was out, across, then down, a right turn, then back up, a cross over ... well anyway, it was a mix 'n match of SA destinations. It did not work out at all due to new kids arriving, local political drama and plain old bad luck ... so 2018 was hanging under a cloud to start with with pent up expectations from a year back. But as the time approached it looked like all would be as planned.

I was joined by XRRX and Rider 39 for the first part of the trip, they would head for Baviaans and I was staying over in Graaf Reinet. Lekker weather greeted us for the start and we made the best of it as us bikers do ... all of 9'C degrees ... no problem then.

We stopped over for something warm in De Rust on our way to Willowmore.

The rain was soft put persistent, so we took it easy.

It warms up to 11' degrees, toasty.

XRRX's BM goes into speedway mode in some corners and he stops to check ... good thing we have a can of fix it.

We make it to Willowmore with 12 000 bicycles having a race to Baviaans or something ... XR repairs his tyre, we split up and I head for GR for my overnight. A good start to this 21 day trip.

The new day starts bright and sunny, Hogsback where I have never been before is tonight's stop. Plenty snow on the mountains.

I take the R337 to Pearston ... but it looks like heavy traffic has had a run without any luck. So head for Witmos instead.

It's a nice, quiet road, crystal clear sky's and warming up as the day progresses.

For this trip I have spent some time and energy on Alpine Rims, Motoz Tractionator Adventure tyres ... this would be problem free for the next 6600km but man, is that front noisy from 35kmh onwards!

Nice to see water flowing again.

Turns out there's a 40th birthday party at the lodge so I park the bike up close for the night. Day two ends well and surprisingly quiet.

Day 3 has Colesburg as the destination and it starts well. Nice pass heading North out of Hogsback to Seymour ... but not that much to see in Seymour.

In my planning I wanted to do the Katberg Pass ... to be honest it was a little more rocky than I expected and don't need any drama so early into this ride so about half way up I headed back to Fort Beaufort instead.

For day 4 I head to Douglas, Allen will join there and I make the best of the trip through the Mid Karoo expanses.

I have now been here too ... neat and tidy ... but odd too.

North of Orania the surface deteriorates and it will stay like this for tomorrow too.

In Douglas we stay at the Villiera Guest House, nice place and right on the Vaal. On another RR I read about the nice road on the North side of the river that heads towards Prieska, we start off on that ... it's stony but fine.

After following the river for 30k's we head NW towards Niekerkshoop.

In Kakamas we stay at the Vergelegen Guest House with it's black Swans, I stayed here last year and we have Springbok for dinner.

We head for Loeriesfontein today and it's 300km of perfect roadway ... 1 truck passes us all day.

Tough life out here.

The new wind farm brought a short lived prosperity to Loeries 60k's away whilst under construction but it has quietened down now.

It must be one of the longest dirt roads in SA after the R355.

Lots of signs of good rains recently too.

Our spot for tonight with great parking.

Today is day 7 and we're heading for Sutherland.

The R355 to Calvinia is perfect, smooth and quiet.

We take a farmers road, an alternative route towards Middelpos.

This makes us think twice .... but not far down the road we run into the farmer who is fine with us going through his property. It's to keep the 4x4 crowd out he says ...
