With all the inputs by participants to date...is there anyone that would feel to suggest a different bike than what I have been considering?

R1200GS ??

I was thinking about it......but concerned about maintenance costs....it is a BMW after all.
One aspect that stands out....they CAN do mileage...

I am a petrol head but regardless how much i like the KTM 1190/1090 I will not get my head around it to buy one. So many wow factors but what confuses me is that you are concerned about a GS1200 maintenance cost. KTM = ATM joke is actually not a joke... :lol8:

Reading through your thread I can't see how any of the other bikes mentioned can beat the DL1000 in 1st reliability and 2nd running cost.

Thanx for the input Tom,

Taking this step to spend so much money on a bike is a really big step for me....was actually considering a second car for the wife but the desire to ride again have actually overwhelmed me...and the wife actually supports the desire...

I think the reason why the KTM was a choice as well was due to me having KTM offroads that I serviced/maintained myself where possible, ....so saved some costs in terms of labour etc.
The same applied to my KLR and Versys...if I can do something myself then I will attempt it.

Maybe it’s because I try to save money where possible to do something myself but obviously when looking at some of these bikes, they might be to complicated to work on yourself when coming to electronics etc.

Must admit I have not done much in terms of checking the net pertaining to the GS...

That’s why I threw out the question to get some opinions and suggestions from people that either have or had these bikes.....the internet is full of positive and negative info and yes, one needs to consider as much as possible....maybe I’m overthinking this

The 1190 would be awesome.

However with the air filter dirt issues and motors expiring because of it I would be sceptical of 2nd hand 1190s.

It is an awesome bike.

I came across more than one video where this filter issue was addressed....

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes the issue can be fixed.

The question is - was the issue fixed on this bike you want to buy?

Was the issue fixed before any damage was done - or was it fixed after the fact?

For what you said... the DL, but for the money I'd go for the 650XT V-strom. It will get you there with the same comfort and speed as the 1000, and you have a bike with some decent off-tar capabilities.
...dis nooit te laat om n happy childhood te he nie !

…, I wish I could own them all, and until I can afford to own them all at once, I will own them one at a time...

As a KTM fan ( which is not a ATM by the way, if you look after them ), it's clear to me that your requirements are more functionally driven than fun driven.
That being the case, the Suzy is your bike.

Take your wife for a spin on a XT1200 Super Tenere.  Bullet proof bikes well capable for what you want to do together with the wife.
KTM is for when you want to play by yourself I think.

I WOULD RATHER BE AN HONEST ASSHOLE .... THAN A FLIPPEN LIAR !

Ducati 100cc Mountaineer, Honda 550 K3, Suzuki Gs1000E, Suzuki Gs1000G, Suzuki 1100 Katana, BMW R1100RT, BMW R1150RT,,,,,All gone. Only 2014 ST in the garage at the moment... And Honda XL 600

You’re referring to the 650XT?

Will this be with the dealers?

Spoke to Suzuki, no special at this point in time, might have been at the time when the episode was recorded.

Triumph...mmm...my brother has been punting the 800 XCX/XCA.... but I read through a few threads and their service costs seemed a bit steep..

I have a 2015 1050 and I am very happy with it. I use it for similar to your description, once a week outing to the airfield or now and again out to black horse for lunch with the lass. Parys and cradle area good fun as well. Mostly road, some gravel highways. It performs well, its a great bike and I think a solid option ??

Its a no brainer. The 1050 is the newest with lowest km. In a year or 3 you will be thankful for having bought the latest bike.
BoosterPlug, LED Spots, Tool Tubes, RustStop, Kappa Screens, Top boxes, Tank Bags - whatever works for me.

Congrats. Many safe miles  :thumleft:

Show us some pics
