690R - your thoughts
« on: September 24, 2019, 08:50:35 am »
There is a 690 R up for grabs, with 31000km (check bikes for sale).

I am tempted, would be a great 2nd bike.

Those of you who do ride them  would be the best to ask for a review.

What is the general consensus?

Never hesitate to take that ride. Ride safe, ride often and ride far. The soul demands it.

I assume youíre concerned about the mileage...

I have had my 690 from 9000km. Have done many long trips and have only had a handful of issues at the beginning (dirty fuel, broken seat, broken speedo etc.)

I service it regularly and have done some preventative maintenance including upgrading the rocker arms, can tensioner and now have over 30,000km on it. I feel itís more reliable now than ever. I just donít have issues with it. There are plenty of storyís of guys do 100,000km on these bikes no problem- they are fairly over engineered.

That being said if it hasnít been looked after it will be another story. But to sort out a top end on a bike like this is fairly strait forward and not that expensive relatively speaking.
BMW 1150 GSA - 2004
KTM 690R - 2014
KTM 300 X-CW - 2012
KTM 530 EXC Rally - 2011 SOLD, KTM 690R - 2009 SOLD, BMW 1200GS 2009 SOLD

Can comment on the one for sale but they are great bikes.
I have a 2015 and love it, I also have a 790 but couldnít bring myself to sell the 690 just because itís so much fun to ride.
But then again Iíve always loved thumpers.

I had a 2013 690 and really enjoyed the bike, they do need to be preventative maintained though and I seriously doubt youíd find a 100 000 km example thatís never given issues :lol8:

My 690 now has 32 000 odd kms on the clock. Itís dead reliable and Iíd trust it to take me anywhere. I probably had 5-6 other bikes while owning the 690. The rest are all gone but I canít bring myself to let the 690 go. That said I bought it new and spared no expense on maintenance.
