The 650 is a much better all rounder than the 400, especially touring long distances.

I had the identical year model, and of course colour.

A few cheap mods to the carb and airbox, as well as a free flow cannister, brings it alive.

You need a better protecting bash plate.

Hyde for plastic. Shout if you need assistance.

PSP or SSS Racing for an alu bash plate.

PSP also made a nice luggage rack.

The exhaust is stainless. Some scotch brite gives the header a nice brushed finished.

The suspension on the DR is not great for technical riding.

I had everything to transplant a DRZ 400 front end and Sachs rear shock to the DR.

Bought a Husky 610 TE, followed by a KTM 500. All history now.

An IMS 18 liter LR tank was my prefered choice.

Superfoxi can assist with affordable suspension changes.

Read the DR 650 thread on here.

Remove the upper chain roller immediately, and blank the threaded hole off.

Buy the counter shaft (sprocket shaft) oil seal retainer.

Inspect and lock the neutral sender screws.

Congratulations with acquiring a fantastic bike, the best quality option in the 650 class.

Lastly, a screen such as Screens for Bike, is recommended for highway cruising.

Thank you for all of this input and info, I will find it very useful.

Bigger tank is a definite, but not a ridiculous size either. Appear to be as rare as rocking horse shit.
A sizeable soft tail bag too.... I have more than adequate dry bags etc.
Screen, absolutely.
Suspension will have to wait. Once I get a better feel of it.

Already got my first x country dirt route on the planning table.

Well I'm a cheapie so if you are too, then read this https://advrider.com/f/threads/adapt-the-gsxr600-gsxr750-or-gsxr1000-pipe-to-the-dr650.697314/

Problem with SA is that the cans you want are not available, can't find them anywhere at all.
So 4th option was a Busa can (stamped 24f0). I was also lucky enough to find someone that had made a mid pipe and shortened one already, they didn't do a great job though so I might redo it myself with a new one.
https://www.hayabusa.org/forum/threads/stock-can-muffler-mod-cut-gut-thing.72658/

I have another set of Busa cans, If you are any good at welding ally or know someone who is then I could part with the left hand side one (Where you'd just have to move the orientation of the mount or make a new one).
So much to do, so little time. Better get going then!

Just fitted a ktm 550 exe end can that I aquiered for 300 rs almost brand new. What a nice farkel it turned out to be. Nice deep burble without being obtrusively loud. Carecteristic Dr backfire almost completely gone, no jetting done and bike feels generally happier. Try it, u can thank me later  :ricky:
On the outside looking in.

OK, so now the modifications begin........

Firstly, the exhaust. I've got my eye on the piece I want but need to sort the mid-pipe. Now I'm no fundi, so welding/cutting etc is best left to someone else.

Any pointers in Centurion that anyone recommends?

I owned a clean DR-Z400E for about 4 years. Did a few karoo trips, few funduros, commuted daily, was a lovely bike. I had 1 issue.. The gearing in stock form wasn't suited for long trips. So you had to "play" with fitting different sprocket sizes to get the bike running comfortably @ around 120km/h on the highway. Doing that, the first gear felt very "tall" for off rides.

Then came the opportunity for a good deal on a DR650. It was a no brainer..

My DR has got the following mods:

- FMF Powercore 4 Tail pipe (came with bike)
- Trail Tech Vapour Speedo (came with bike)
- PSP  bash plate and luggage rack (came with bike)
- NSU loctite/safety wire "fix" (I did)
- Engine cases protective covers (I fitted)
- IMS 18L fuel tank (I fitted)
- FCR 39mm carb (I fitted - HIGHLY recommended)
- Set of 46mm USD forks & YZ front wheel (I fitted off a YZ450)

All these "upgrades" made my DR exactly what I wanted. All components fitted by myself I found on the used market for under R10k. Sure, modding the bike took some effort, but I liked doing all those mods over time. The bike is happy to go buy milk quickly at the local Spar or travel thousands of kilometers across Africa.

Like many online reviews, I agree if you mostly are planning off road dual riding, the DRZ with better stock suspension is best suited.

I'm a huge DR650 fan and although the is no such thing as a "perfect" all rounder bike, the DR650 comes close. You made the right choice and enjoy the upgrade journey :)
