The Orange river was flowing strong at Groblershoop....unfortunately i couldnt find decent accommodation in the small town for my budget so pushed on for Upington and arrived there at sunset.....with a choice of places to stay and places to eat......my guest house for the night cost me R390 ront

after a quick shower went down the road for a hearty meal and refreshments......a long but fulfilling day in the saddle.......i was in love with my bike all over again....and very impressed with my new Dunlop Trailmax Missions........they were soaking up everything this trip threw at them......sand ......mud.....rocks.....and tar......no road noise .......and i could remain sane the whole trip

On the way to Augrabies in Keimoes they were busy closing the tar road to Kenhardt as the bridge was now flooded......I knew then that i would have to find another way home....and most likely the gravel road on the other side of the Orange from Kakamas,,......

this was the route i took after watching the falls to Calvinia

The Gravel R359 between Kakamas and Kenhardt had seen its fair share of rain and almost every dip in the 80km must have been a river so it was a long 80km with mud pools washes and sandy river sections.......never the less i got to Kenhardt in one piece

by the time i got to Kenhardt i was fairly gatvol of the tedious and endless shitty washed away sections of dirt road that i was grateful for the tar.....and the only incident between there and Calvinia was riding into a swarm of locusts ........it was so bad i held my hand infront of my visor to ensure i would still be able to see past the squashed locust bodies that hit me at speed.....

I also met an old biker standing by the roadside waiting for his son to join him from Cape Town to go see the Augrabies falls together......I stopped and we chatted for a long while.....he was 79 years young and i was impressed and told him i hoped to ride until his age one day........i didnt tell him its coming soon and im only 20 years behind him

Any way the ride to Calvina was fairly straight forward and i clocked into the Calvinia Hotel......a regular stay over for me......and the room was a wonderful R300 for the night.......yes its an old hotel but the rooms are fine for me and theres an aircon.......refreshments on hand and a hearty home cooked meal

My route for the day was the longest dirt road the R355 between Calvinia and Ceres and my destination was the Tankwa Padstal

this was a nice scenic road

The Tankwa Padstal is a nice oasis in the middle of nowhere and if you get lucky you get to chat to Hein the owner.......the people are friendly and the food is nice

I will always make a point of stopping here ......theres a kind of peace its hard to explain....

after a good meal and chat with Hein it was over Katbakkies to Ceres and Wellington farm stall for ice coffee and finally home....

another Great Ride on my trusty steed  :thumleft: O0

Very nice report. I was thinking of going up to see the mighty Orange myself. But  alas.

We drove past the coffee stall outside Wellington on Friday but we were pressed for time to get to Porterville. Is it a “permanent” fixture there?

Dunlop Trailmax Missions.

By the look of them they could get as popular as the old pattern Anakees. :thumleft:
