Fixing my 2009 BMW G450X
« on: June 14, 2021, 02:31:24 pm »
Got my 2010 BMW G450X a week ago and sadly there seems to be an issue with the alternator since it does not charge the battery while riding, luckily with me being lightweight and the bike as well, my friends just pushed me to jumpstart the bike to get me home where I put it on charge again.

We did confirm the problem Saturday afternoon by stripping the bike and testing the 3-phase cable with the voltmeter where it read 30 - 16 - 6. So yeah, a new alternator needed, fun times...

If anyone knows a secondhand BMW dealer for parts or know of someone who can source an alternator, please DM me. I will greatly appreciate it.

I have contacted Ryan's Motorcycle Surgery but would like some more options as well. I tried Startline and Craig's but they don't sell any alternators.

Congrats on the 450X. Lekker bike.
I believe you might be looking at a stator repair / replacement.
Big Dom and Flying Brick are the guys that will have the info - hopefully they see this and reply.

Remove the stator and the chances are very good that you have a burnt winding on it! This is a pretty common failure. You will probably not notice it from the front and need to unbolt it (note my comment later about the bolts). The good news is that it can be rewound relatively cheaply - the replacement part is very very difficult to come by and very expensive! The guy to do this is Roger Steele - 083 2892245 - he works through PostNet and does an excellent job that is better than OEM (many dealers use him and send their jobs to him). You are very lucky that the flywheel did not come loose as this is also one of the failures that ends up trashing both the flywheel and the stator - and new replacements are literally unobtainable. When you replace the flywheel see if you can get matching high tensile bolts with a similar low capped head (or have them turned down) and ensure you Loctite and torque them to spec. Pic below of what my stator looked like and other failures are all mostly identical. Good luck and enjoy the bike - they are actually great bikes and good value for money. Like any bike you just need to understand their workings and quirks.

PS You are lucky you could run start the bike - not always possible with a FI bike if the battery is properly flat and cannot ignite the injector.

Thanks for your detailed reply @BiG DoM. Think this will be the best route to go with. I have asked my friend to come to help me remove the stator since he owns the right tools to open the alternator.

After that, I will make contact with Roger and send him a pic of the stator and see if he can help me out.

Yep, Big Dom is the G450X expert and speaks not with fork tongue.

I id my son's one here in PTA for less than R1000, if I recall, there's a thread on here somewhere about it with the guys contact details. But I don't know if he does the postnet thing so as Dom said that other gentleman is your best bet.

Good luck!

It is never nice to have these type of issues shortly after you get a "new" bike, but at least you get to know your bike.

You can take the stator to J Schipper & Sons in Stikland to be rewound.

Agreed, not nice at all but a part of the package when you buy second hand I guess.

Thank you for the reference, we did a few calls and more than one motorbike shop recommended a guy called Jannie. He is local, so I am taking it to him to do the rewound and a full check-over of the bike to avoid any other disappointment.

After literally nobody wants to touch this bike we decided to tackle the job ourselves.

As mentioned by @BiG DoM, it was indeed that burned winding.

We took it to Schipper and Sons for a rewinding, ETA within the next week.

Upon opening we experience a bit of play on the freewheel, is this normal? Here is a video for reference: https://youtu.be/j8DCKvHsSZQ

The bolts from the factory seem fine, nothing loose that we could have noticed. But inside the flywheel, we noticed some groove lines as seen in the photo below.

I think looks OK but post on the G450X forum and fb for further feedback. I am pleased the stator will be sorted easily enough. Remember my caveat re the flywheel bolts ... you don't want your fresh stator to end up looking like this  :-[

@BiG DoM

The screws of the flywheel seem fine and not loose at all, we did check that as well. Would you still say replace them?

I guess they may have been checked and done before but I would be tempted to check - it only takes one bolt to come loose to destroy the stator. I am sure even a Google search would bring up this issue with the G450X and Husky 449. I think there was even a recall with the Husky.

Yes, I think so, because we noticed that the alternator was opened from two signs: 1. You could see it on the outer case; 2. It was glued together.

So I think I am safe on the screws for now.

Good on ya for tackling the job yourself :-)

Sorry I couldn't be there, it's a nice learning curve and to get a better understanding of how the parts etc work.
