U.S. Marine Leaving IRAQ, vacationing in Cape Town.....Ideas?
« on: August 11, 2009, 08:20:34 am »
Hello....

I am a U.S. Marine in Iraq and an avid BMW GS rider.  I have a '96 GS (adventure) set up for world travel....in my garage!  :'(

I am going on my mid tour leave in Mid October (13-31 October).  I am going to be spending my leave in Cape Town South Africa with my wife, also an avid rider.  I am looking to meet some folks, and do a bit of riding as part of my touring the Western Cape.

I am interested in bike rentals, bike nights, get togethers with bikers...

I am also looking at getting a Blosson (sp?) exhaust for my 96 1100GS.

If you have any tips or would like to contact me... you can email me at onebikeonehorse@gmail.com or through this website.

thanks, and I look forward to finally getting to South Africa after years of trying!

---Will

Welcome to South Africa! Can't wait to meet you!

For bike rentals, contact Lawrence (hermanator on the forum) at info@longwaymoto.co.za - he has some of the new twin cylinder F650s for rental. I'm sure a whole bunch of us would be more than happy to take you guys on a few lovely scenic rides around the area, just let us know when you've arrived!

correct spelling = Bosson ;)

Welcome onebikeonehorse

I've been working in Iraq, DOD - Security (convoys) 2005-2006. Stationed near the Babylon hotel near the green Zone, July 14th (can't remember the date) bridge. Worked all over Iraq, where were or are you stationed? Maybe we met, had a few conversations with the Marines up there, as well as training in ‘camp India’.

Anyhow, welcome to the forum and South Africa. Would like to meet you but unfortunately inland, about 1400km NE of Cape Town!

If you are down in the Cape and a GS fan, there is a very active BMW bike club in the Mother City: :ricky:

http://www.bmwmotorcycleclubcape.co.za/

Suggestions:
Ride the many older mountain passes in the Cape - Baines Kloof, etc..
Do a chauffeured wine tour if the weather is too wet to ride - and swallow, don't spit out!
Ride the R62.
Ride the coastal road from Gordons Bay through Hermanus, Stanford and onward to Bredasdorp and Cape Agulhas.
If you have time, ride some of the passes between Oudtshoorn and George/Knysna.
Avoid the N-routes...!
Then:
Fall in love with the country...?
Come back again and ride around it again...more slowly:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=446291

(17-21 days should do just fine) ;D
Take lots of photographs...!
Do a ride report for us and others...
