PENGA TRIP NOVEMBER 2009
Walkerville rangers organized a second trip to Penga as we had to cancel doing the
Long route due to the river level to high.
Left the plots at 0430 on Friday and arrived at Oom Piets house at +/- 1100 hrs
and after unloading everything we were hot and need a swim.
The Guys that went with where: Graham (DR KLR)
Philip (ORANGE KLR)
Mike
Robin
Rob (CRACKER)
The tow vehicle driven by Mike, thanks
The weather was great, so we rode to the river for a swim and a borrie braai.
The river was luke warm and very silty due to the recent rains.
Mike on his Ktm had fitted Panniers and Bar back box for this ride and there where
bets as to how long they would take to fall off.
Mike found them to heavy with all the refreshment so we had to consume it all
while he removed them.
Watched the locals catch fish with a piece of shade netting
And after a few hours of floating and lots of refreshments and a braai we
where face with some very weird animals trying to climb out the muddy riverbank,
have photos but no porno allowed on this site and do not want to put the ladies off men.
The trip back to Oom Piets was fun to say the lest
Mike and his brother visited us for a braai and discussion about which route to take
Had a great time but early to bed for an early departure to miss the hot weather
The next Day
The weather had changed and we left in the rain at 0600 hrs. Had a great
ride to the river crossing where the river had risen to dangers levels but
we all manager to cross uneventfully, sorry no photos due to the rain.
Rob (cracker) who his still on crutches drove the backup 4 x 4 and did a
Fantastic job of keeping up with us, He is as fast in the 4 x 4 as he is on his KLR
The weather cleared as we rode and we made good time up to our camp, here
Robin packs his tools for the Epic trip the next day.
That afternoon we took the 4 x 4 for a sunset booze cruise on a near by hill top,
Awesome to be in the middle of the African bush and watch the sunset
The camp is in the bush somewhere you can just see the water tank.
Note the hills and not the refreshments.
The next morning up early for a 0530 departure time to miss the heat of the day!
Turned out we left in the clouds which fogs up your goggles and glass so that
you cannot see where you are going, fun with the technical ride we had before us.
Some Photos showing the clouds/mist/rain/gala force winds and bad terrain we rode
through.
Not long after this spot we had an unfortunate fall in the slippery conditions
And after carefully consideration we confirmed he had damaged his shoulder
Badly and would not be able to ride out of this technical area,
Luckily we had seen a worker in a bakkie and after asking him to take our
Injured rider, and bike out to the reserves main gate. This where we hit a problem as no bikes are
allowed but after Grahams (DR KLR) careful negotiations and lots of South African
Rands we got him transported with his bike to Burgersfort
We still had a problem with some very authoritarian warders who eventually gave us
A armed escort with two 4 x4’s, one in front and one behind to the other gate so
we could continue our trip and get back to camp and return to Burgersfort, after
some very spectacular and technical passes done at a fair pace, no time for photos nor
smoke breaks we got back to camp where we packed up and returned to Penga
and the vehicles to get us back to Josie and a hospital with x-rays.
The armed escorts, not the type of escorts I was hoping for.
A view of the road down the pass.
Mike had in the mean time seen a doctor in Burgersfort who diagnosed a
Dislocated shoulder and had been give a dose of the very good stuff!! Morphine.
After a painful ride for Mike back to Josie we got to the hospital and his
Family at 1000 that night, and Mike was home by 1200.
He is healing well and hopefully back on desire (KTM 525) soon.
This was a ride to die for and we will be back next year.
Thanks to Robin for looking after Oom Piet and thanks to
Graham for another awesome trip with great people and one of the best of rides.
