I really think Roadcat needs to get a bigger cat in the Avitar.....

I don't think wind protection is needed t that "speed"... :)

Mostly I would agree, but travelling through the Karroo for hours at end (and at that "speed" it does take hours  :)) hammers the body and increases fatigue - any protection is then valuable.

And it might look cool! It could also look k@K, but I am going to be optimistic until I rip it off and trash it......

Also true...
You could try to fit one of my rally fairings. They are designed to fit the Africa Twin - but if your tank is big enough...who knows!

You made me remember my good old 500, my first Thumper!  The picture was when we left for Hondeklipbaai from Stellenbosch.

I must say, my racks broke on the second last day in the cederberg.  Kak design, but at least it held up for a week.

Almost time to send the frame and others things to be powder coated. First the kick stand has to be mended. I am finding out that clean green and a wire brush will work wonders on rusted metals that seemed all but wasted away.

2 new questions.
1. What is the best paint to be used to spray the engine (i don't want a high gloss look/finish)
2. Does anyone have the name of a good "chromer" . I have been sent in the direction of African Electroplating. Any experience with these guys?

The frame is going to JG Powdercoaters

One more thing, it pains me to admit but i will probably need to find new plastic side panels. I have been trying to think of ways to keep this bike as original as possible, but they seem like they will bring the finished look down a notch. The exhaust has come up very well without having to be p coated the handle bars will be re- chromed, we have ordered a host of new bits and bobs (indicators, levers, foot pegs, rear light, mirrors) . Does anyone know where i can start a search for these panels?

Good Morning TT!!
How about some pics?? And what are you doing up at 02:49:14AM?????

Seriously tho, I orderd the side-covers from Linex in Randburg - I seem to think the main warehouse in Durban had them in stock - only white but you can het hem wrapped. I would suggest wrapping them rather than painting them as they flex a bit.

My question is about the footpegs - did you order just the pegs, just the rubbers or the whole unit including the hanger that bolts onto the frame on the spline? I need a complete pair of footpegs including the hangers and I cannot seem to find any!

Regarding your spray paint - I used matt black heat resistant from Builders - worked fine. I think hey do a semi gloss as well?

thanks,

The foot peg rubbers were ordered. The condition of the foot pegs themselves were fine so the guy didn't need to investigate further. Also surprising to find the rubbers for the clutch and brake levers. And even though i didnt have one before , we ordered the little toolbox for next to the seat , just because it was available and i'd seen it on another bike online

Any idea what web-site was used to get the spares? I always look for places for parts....

Startline in Edenvale have a great number of "consumables" for XT's as well - levers, indicators, shocks, grips, tyres etc. if you ever need - and they have branches all over SA as far as I know....

I am not sure of who they use . I am already getting some of the stuff done myself to cut out the "middle man" on some things to save costs, so i don't want to seem cheeky to ask now. Will find out when the bike is complete, were in Kempton so it could be Startline seeing they're close.

Nice job on that engine  :thumleft:

One question though - how is powder coating the frame handling the heat from the oil tank  ???

The dirt on the card, is a special import from Lesotho. Some of which has been there since the last ride up the Sani Pass 10 1/2 years ago. Quite a tough bastard to get it off.
I took the various parts in to the powder coaters and electroplaters today ..... going to look good .

The exhaust will be coated with powder that can take 800oC

Wow that carb looks good!  We once cooked a carb on my wifes gas stove in a pot with white vinegar.  Works great to get all the pores open and to get the outside clean.

The house Stank of old petrol/oil so Wife = not happy, but Carb = clean and worked like a charm..

OK, so now my attempt at a re-build is starting to look a little pale in comparison....... Hmm......
I got a carb repair kit from the UK - has all the seals, needle & seat, gaskets etc. - great to redo the carb campletely!

What did you actually clean the outside of the carb with?

Clean Green and various wire brushes + 1 tennis elbow later = clean carb ... I use the other arm.
