Wilddog ride to Aguhlas
SUNDAY must have been one of the best riding days in the world.
Windless, warm but not overbearing and the gravel roads were empty of cages and other dangerous vehicles.
Four of us including Andy, Anton and Wayne mounted on his Oryx met at 7am at the N1 Engen One Stop and took off for Stellenbosch, Helshoogte, Franschhoek and over the pass to Theewaterskloof dam with the only irritation being 4 roadies trying a Rossi on the pass.
From the dam we headed down to Bot River and then across to Klaarwydersdorp and left on the Hemel and Aarde before turning right on some of the best gravel towards Stanford.
Once on the Stanford road we headed to the small village for an excellent breakfast before heading back about 4km and turning back onto gravel towards Elim.
Again the gravel proved to be excellent and we arrived in the sleepy village where time seems to have stood still in time for the end of the church service.
The entire village was walking back to their small houses as we exited the village headed for Baardskeeredebos, yet another sleepy dorp with an artists studio on every corner before striking down toward the coast - next stop Struisbaai and a cold drink.
Seated on the deck of the pub and restaurant looking out on a Mediterranean blue sea, with an ever so slight cool breeze Andy suggested we all called home, made some clever excuse and stayed over.
Unfortunately we are all so dedicated we left and headed home knowing that the country and the Receiver of Revenue needs our services.
Once back on the gravel and again out of the stream of cages we headed across to Die Dam and back onto the tar headed for Gansbaai, Stanford, Hermanus and back onto the Hemel and Aarde road.
The only downside of the trip was the crawl through Hermanus but once back on the gravel headed for Caledon peace again reigned.
A quick fill up in Caledon and back onto the gravel backroads to Dassiesfontein, across the N2 to the turnoff to Villiersdorp, left onto the Bot River gravel road and back over the dam wall and up the Franschhoek pass.
And as predicted lying in pieces on one of the tight bends was once a high powered road bike. Hopefully the rider is out of danger.
After a quick rest in Franschhoek it was again back onto the busy roads and home.
All in a 607 km day according to my speedo in the sky, as we rode 6 passes – Franschhoek twice, Akkedisberg, Helshoogte and the Van Der Stel Pass twice. It was a great ride thanks to Andy, Wayne and Anton.
