This is one of the 'four passes'. It takes the main road from Franschoek over the mountains into the basin that is the source of the Riversonderend river. At the summit which is 701m the view over the upper valley of the Berg river to the west is superb. The descent to the east is difficult and winds through a narrow gorge.
The first European settlers noticed that migrating wild animals had found the most practical way over the mountains. For more than a hundred years the settlers used the 'Elephant path' till in 1819 a farmer, J Cats, made some simple imrovements and later the military used the route as a wagon trail, calling it the Cats road.
