Wow – This was a weekend! I had thought it would just be an easy cruise up, bit of camping, bit of karkpraat, easy cruise back, but weather and some fortuitous chance link-ups resulted in quite a lot more than I had planned for.

I met up with Ian(theTooth) at Camperdown, where the weather was just speckling our visors. “No Problem” I think. It’s going to clear up, so I don’t do the whole rain suit thing, but the weather got progressively wetter, until up Mooi River way we ended up in a thunderstorm as hectic as anything I have ever experienced.

A mega coffee and burger at the Estcourt Ultra City helped me cheer up a bit, but even though the last 75Km to G-Burg was dry, I was still wet when we got to the campsite to join the party.

Laurika and Ian’s homes on the range.

Roxenz and I set off to do a little trip up the berg. We waited quite a while for some of the other folk to get mobile, but there was so much confusion as to who was going where that we were scared Saturday would be Sunday before we hit the road. So we just headed up the Middledale pass alone.

At the top we saw Ian , OutThere and Sarah at the T-Junction. They had been up the “verlore valley” pass, and invited us to ride with them. Their plan was to have a look at Bezuidenhout’s pass and make a call. The verdict was “A river – No Chance”, so we all just headed back.

This was what we ended up doing – A really nice “cultural” trip, with great company and surprisingly great weather.

Sarah looking down on KZN and the top of Bezuidenhout’s pass.

The top of the Pass.

From there to Retief’s rock at the Kerkenberg.

A very strange Human Erratic structure protruding from the silicified sandstone country rock.

From  there to visit the “Kaalvoet Vrou” monument. According to the plaques this lady, one of a number of Boer wives and daughters, protested against annexation of “Natalia” by the English.

“Rather bare foot back over the Drakensburg than under an English flag.” Don’t think the protest made much impact in the big scheme of things.

Magnificent view from the top of Retief’s pass.

Map study group

The Caterpillar and Catfish for a lekka lunch and a gentle tar/gravel cruise back to the lekkerist skaapbraai I have ever had.

The trip home was a bit of fun with the mudmonster out to play, but no issue other than Ian’s minor boot-slip side stand incident.

Great weekend, and thanks so much to the organizers.

See you next year.

Thank you so much for a fantastic weekend, sadly no pics of Butch. My camera and phone were not charged so i could not take any more.

1: Friday: packed in ten minutes,solo-ed to Van Reenen, met some dogs, and rode into Geluksburg in a Shower from Hell
my clothes remained wet for the rest of the weekend
2: Friday night, a band, Fantastic braaipack, and a honesty bar, Meg and Benson (the dogs of Draadkar) loving everyone, we went to bed quite late
3: Saturday morning, coffee and everyone scattered for rides. I went to Bergville with Butch and Draadkar, to fetch the sheep
and took a drive out to the shebeen 7km up the Middelpas to meet some Dogs and the Shebeen owner, ice cold beer.
4: had a great swim in the mountain stream, and made friends with the shebeen owner, who offers us a skaap on the spit, next time we come there : he also tried Pistols Helmet on about 30 times....lekker :thumleft:
5: Sat night at camp. more fantastic music, Die skaap was ongoddelik heerlik, Thanks Rick (he will also do it again at the Freestate bash_ at his Backpackers _ and the music (his band) will also be there again.
6: rainstorms, Yodeling locals, jong latte from PTA loved the yodeling ( i thought one was going to throw some wet underware)
7: Prizegiving : very generously donated by Draadkar (as was the stickers) 4 X slime compressors (thank you so much)
8: was forced to go to bed, as everything was wet...even the skaap
9: Early morning departure, with BigRay and Pistol, the roads out we thought would be a disaster and slimey, it turned out to be quite doable, and infact, loads of fun. Went home via Villiers and Cornelia (road in great condition) with the obligatory shebeen stops along the way.
10: thanks to all the lads that take such good care of us Biker ladies: even when its not necessary, always such grand gentlemen. thanks to all the pillions and wives of co dogs. so wonderful to meet you all

11: lastly : thank you to Butch and Draadkar: generous of spirit, adventurous and bloody nice people. best fun ever!

Yup - That road has potholes.

I was expecting to see Pistol skinny dipping in some of the water-filled ones, and that would not have been a pretty sight.
