KTM 640 performance improvement?
« on: August 27, 2007, 02:31:20 pm »
Good day all, I would like to get a bit more performance from my 640 adv. At the moment it is stock and terribly slow, I'm lucky to see 140km/h and it just fades away on slight uphills. Offroad it is ok, but needs a bit more grunt.

Any suggestions will be greatly appretiated.

What pype works the best for this bike? Any other improvements that might help?

My last steed was a 640

All i did was put an akra pipe on +- R3000.00 and removed the toplid of the airbox and put a DNA airfilter
Also raised the needle and went a bit better

Most i ever got out of her was 165km/h

If that's you in your avatar I think your bike's doing OK.  :o

It's a friggen motorcycle, it's not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The windnoise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you shit your pants every now and then. Suck it up. -- Scary Gary MC

Thanks LastDog, I was wondering if the only real performance improvement might not be a trade in for a 990, is it worth going through all the trouble to try and improve on a bike that was never actually meant to go fast on road but to be very competent off road? Yet even off-road one needs a bit more power some times.   ::)

I might just be spoilt with my plastic bike's performance..... ???

I'll go for the pipe and the air filter option, as already suggested. Is the biked tuned optimally ? 140 does not sound right, unless you weight something like the oke in your avatar  ???

You could also play with the sprocket, that's a win / loose combo, either you gain speed and loose power, or visa versa.

If all else fails put a BMW sticker on the side  ;D  or even better a WD sticker top go flatout  ;D

The best single improvement one can make to that bike is a Keihin FCR 41 carb and then a pipe .Ihave had poor results with DNA filters they clog quickly offroad and then the bike does not run at all .640 is much better offroad than 950/990(offroad not dirt road.

Agree, not much you can do. Best is a free-flow pipe and maybe 1 (or 5) up on the jets if you mainly at coast. Take snorkel off. Otherwise, you spending money on bling and that engin is likely to pack up if you fiddle too much.

I would strongly suggest that you get yourself a EXC250 or 300 or even 450 for the offroad and a 950 equivelant for riding over 140kmph.

Thanks Runner, I'll be having a chat to the people at The Roost as well, see what i can do about getting a bit more out of the bike, where might I get my hands on a carb as suggested? And what pype would you suggest? Akrapovic?

Nardus, I have a Beta 525 for offroad play, awsome monster. That might be why I feel the KTM is a bit lazy. The Beta will outperform the KTM from start to top end without a problem. I also have a WR250 that I recently put a FMF pype on and had a jet kit done, the differance is amazing on the small 250. I was hoping for a similar result if the same could be done to the 640.

That Beta has a FCR fitted just fit that one for the weekend ,the jetting will be fine , then you can see or feel the difference. Those motors are reliable a pipe or carb will not affect reliability. With the stock carb leave the snorkel in rather take off the cover in the airbox cover, those thing are sensitive where the air comes from.It will never run like a 525, those 640 motors are 20 years old.

Hang in there, the 690 Adventure will be coming out next year. May see it at the Paris bike show.

That engine is aparently a goody and it is fuel injected.
I wonder where that road goes? And that, has usually made all the difference. Appologies to Mr Frost
