Have you guys considered plasti-dipping?
Not done it myself, but feedback seems very good and you can do it yourself and repair or replace (peels off in a single piece) if you need to.
I guess a possible limitation would be the amount of colours available if you need something fancy.

I just converted those figures of mine (which I had to convert from UK miles per gallon already) to km/l and mine matches yours. Town is 23.3km/l and open road is 27.7km/l, and I never consciously try and limit revs or anything to improve this, so I am quite sure I can get better still I wanted to.
I think your comparison with the corolla is actually quite accurate :thumleft:, and as an NC700 rider, I am not offended by the least. It is a bike you buy with your head, not your heart (metaphorically speaking of course).
I use mine as a daily commuter in the wind and rain here in Scotland...
