Kobus Two of us are doing a Cape Town to Joberg Offroad end of October over 7 days, 450km/day. Taking bike down to Cape on train then Kleinkaroo, Baviaans, Karoo, Rhodes, Lesotho, Johannesburg - 3,000km. Using tar only to connect only so mostly offroad, several "special sections" along the way...

I have this exact same one. Bought it from Runner. Also carry 2x Masterlinks & short portion of DID chain in case chain needs to be shortened & mended.

@ Anton. I've just returned from a week shooting from the bike in Botswana/Zimbabwe. Carried all my equipment in A lowepro bag, changed lenses often. I'm not easy on equipment, jump off the bike, drop the Lowepro into the dust, zip it open, grab equipment & shoot ... so it goes all day long...

In a Lowepro bag on my back. Has to be best place from a shock & vibration perspective when riding offroad. Not ideal for quick access but I'm used to it, my equipment is worth more than my bike by a stretch. Also handy when you're not with your bike, just carry the backpack along. Pelican can...

I have the Canon 10-22. I shoot mostly mountain biking so it means action and landscape work. The 10-22/10-20/8-16 ranges are slow lenses, not know for being sharp and known for severe distortion on the edges. Pick anyone of the lot ... much of a muchness, they are all slow but for landscapes...

I had both my Dakar front forks as well as the rear shock overhauled by Alex in Pretoria. Got them back as good as new.  Have just put them through a very rough ride through Botswana & Zim. Came through with flying colours! PM me for his details.

Thanks Ganjora. How about the section on the map, just as you go through the border post - shortcut through to Golden Gate basically? It looks fine on Google Earth but I've been tricked by that before.

Also, will appreciate feedback as to the state of the road from Butha-Buthe through the valley to Monantsapass? Safety, road condition. We're planning to take this detour en-route from Sani to Clarens.

Has anyone done this section of road? It's on the SA side as you cross through the Monantsapass Border Post from Lesotho side.

It can be done but it's sand jeep track all the way, some places thicker than others. The jeep track is reasonably compact due to the many cars doing it every day so rideable but very sandy. Many people do it with 4x2 vehicles but obviously not recommended, point is it's not deep sand all the...
