Thanks for all the feedback so far... Perhaps I should start with bying the safety gear first and then get the bike... What do you guys recommend in terms of safety gear (brand and cost). An I go 2nd hand and what should I avoid? Should I move this discussion to another topic?

Sorry the commuting distance is a type. 20km to work, 10-15 at work and 20 km home.

OK, some more information in me I'm average height (possibly to the shorter side) 1.74meter tall I weigh just over 80kg Commuting average 10km one way And then some hopping around while at work (adding another 10km to that tally) and then 10km back So average of 30 maybe 40km per day?
