Pay it forward: Richa riding suit

Black with white trim riding suit. Nearly new. Complete with zip out liners, body armor, etc. The catch?  The size is double extra small (DXS).  Perfect for a hard riding hobbit. Free to a good burrow.

The foregoing replies contain a lot of good, detailed advice.  Sorry I didn't ask before, Thanks to one and all. BG

    EMS availability

I do a lot of riding in the Klein Karoo in the Sutherland - Merweville - Beaufort West - Barrydale - Montague area. Is EMS available in this area? If so, how would I communicate with them? Via cell phone if reception is available, obviously. If no reception, flag down a passing farmer and ask...

    2007 1200 GS side covers

Preparing my GS for sale. Need to refresh the flat black finish on the side covers. Any suggestions as to a cleaner, polish or whatever?

    Which spray on paint

If in the future you need to touch up valve covers or your swing arm Hammerlite smooth silver is an almost exact match for the stock silver. This doesn't answer your bolt question, but there's always the chance that you may need a post-get-off touch up in the future.

    2008 R1200GSA CRASHBARS

In reference to Jughead's post about an aft bar on WH's crash bars that wrecks shins: I just went out back and looked at my 2007 GS. No bar. I guess that explains why my shins are happy, healthy and unblemished. I wonder if the offending bar is a recent addition? If so, not a surprise. My bars...

    2008 R1200GSA CRASHBARS

Wild At Heart (Cape Town) used to sell a very heavy duty set of crash bars made out of mild steel piping. I ran into a spell of bad luck and/or bad technique a couple of years ago and dumped my GS on the right side four of five times within a few months. All it took to pretty up the bars was a...

    How to Stand Up Properly

Sorry to jump in if what I'm about to write is redundant. That said I stand a lot on rough gravel roads because I don't want the pee-squat hammered out of me. I've only been standing on my GS1200 for a couple of years but it makes all the difference in places like Ou Berg Pass which, although a...

    Tiny but Stubborn

Bike now starts in gear with the clutch lever in. Never heard the elusive 'click'. Just moved the switch back and forth until I got the desired result. A R40 2mm male socket makes the adjustment much quicker. Would have been easy to let this kind of problem go. However, I killed my old KLR on...

    Tiny but Stubborn

Cranked up the heat gun and warmed the clutch lever housing for three or four minutes and the set screw backed out, albeit reluctantly. The switch assembly was clean with no corrosion on the switch button. I'll still get a 2mm Allen driver to make adjustments with the clutch lever/master...

    Tiny but Stubborn

Alright, thanks for the practical ideas. Heat gun #1 because I have one. Sturdy Allen key #2 because I'm going into Cape Town on Monday and will stop by my favourite tool shop pick up a set of industrial strength keys. Will advise on results. Pretty sure other folks have or will have a similar...

    Tiny but Stubborn

2007 GS. The clutch switch adjustment screw (to allow the bike to start whilst in gear) takes a 2mm Allen key. Small Allen keys are bendy and the screw is tight. Have soaked screw all day with aerosol penetrating lube, but no joy. Any ideas?

    For what it's worth

This topic was covered in the GS/ADV section but I think it merits a mention here as well. I rode my 2007 1200GS for almost seven years but never at night until a week ago. Through a series of miscalculations plus a dollop of downright stupidity I found myself at sunset with 200 km of gravel...

How did my headlights get so out of whack?

Problem solved. I took the headlamp assembly off, removed the rear bulb covers and took a look inside. To my surprise I couldn't find the notorious socket and ball assembly anywhere. Nothing was loose or rattling around or seemingly out of place. WTF? Then I noticed the grommet on the front...

How did my headlights get so out of whack?

This post will cover two related topics: why won't my headlamps adjust down far enough (?); and how to fix the dreaded ball-off-the-socket adjuster snafu.Disclaimer and culpability statement: until last Sunday I had never ridden my 2007 GS at night. This explains why I never thought to check the...

    Routine maintenance: odd outcome

Changed the air filter element in my 2007GS and pushed the starter button to see if everything was OK. Not OK. The engine turned over three times or so and just stopped. I had ridden it into the barn 15 minutes previously, so what could have changed in a quarter-hour? Had I left a rag in the...

    Yet Another Unpleasant Surprise

I'm finishing my second cup this AM. Probably passing through Swellendam about 9:30. I'll check at the pub on High Street and on up Tradouw to Barrydale. On a grey 1200GS. CCD plates. BG

    Removing Oxidation from Engine Casing.

Check out blasting the parts with bicarbonate of soda. Evidently a device is available that uses baking soda as a blasting medium and works with a standard air compressor. I just heard about this from a friend who is about to try it on an engine casting. No gritty sand, no pitting, no expensive...
