2 km KLR? Carb or CDI...?

Hi all, I'm new here but am really needing some advice from people who care enough to know.
A newish problem with my KLR is that it battles to start, then runs ok for a while (basically up to temp), then misses/backfires until it becomes impossible to keep it running. Give it 5 mins and it will start (again with difficulty) and run another 2 kilo's or so. It is almost definitely aggravated by full throttle use. It seems to happen mostly straight after I whack it, but it does sometimes just happen anyway.

I first thought of fuel starvation, but float level/fuel flow always seem fine...
What about the CDI?  Anyone have similar problems? ???
