990 Using water

Water level went from the max mark to just under the min mark on a 250km ride yesterday with some slow mud/rock work involved.

I can't find any obvious leaks so probably (hopefully) the water pump right?

My question is, when the water pump fails in the way that lots of 990 water pumps do, where does the water go? Am I risking damage by continuing to ride it for now?
