A-gps not a gps?

A lot of the  cellphones come equipped with a-gps. Is this a proper gps or some kind of  "chinese" equivalent? Is this something that can stand alone or is it a cell network dependant solution?  ??? ???

While you busy answering: eepwall: can you install Garmaps or T4A on a cell with a-gps?
