ABS on 990's

I really like the KTM 990 and am thinking hard to trade my Dakar in on one of those babies. But I understand the 990 R does not come with fitted ABS braking system. The 990 apparently does. Just want to know from you salted riders, is there a major difference between the 990 and the 990R and is the lack of an ABS on the R that noticeable. I am using brakes quite a bit on the Dakar, riding it like a thumper, so not taking it easy. And in general does it have good handling. Dakar is quite nimble I must say, but obviously much ligther than the 990's.

Will appreciate advice, and just in general your experiences with the 990's. Have not ridden it yet, but from all the bikes in the class (BM, Yammie 1200, Triumph), the 990 just does something for me.
