Anodising is used to make aluminium both prettier and more colourful and also more corrosion resistant.
The coating is thin and hard thereby not suited for all applications. Anodised rims for example scratch easily if you are not careful with the tire levers.

Most importantly anodising works fine for pure (soft) "architectural grade" aluminium alloys and AlMg alloys such as 5083 means you can anodize an M113 or the bash plates I make
Wire spoke wheel rims are usually also well suited.
You can't anodize high Si casting alloys (means no OEM wire spoke wheel hubs, no engine covers etc. It also does not work well on high tensile billet Al alloys which contain PB, Cu or Fe although black anodizing might be possible.
