So, I have proved myself to be a proper chick (damn) - I went to pick up some spares from yamaha on Saturday and they heard me from the road with my clattering engine.

Seems as though me having put in oil twice over the last 12 000kms is not enough and I ran my engine dry of oil. Obviously the possible repocussions are astronomical, but it seems as though I am going to get away with top and bottom end bearings (fingers still crossed)!
My question is - is this normal? They put in 3 and a half litres of oil at Yamaha on Saturday. At 12 000kms, should your engine be running on that much oil, or is there possibly a fault?
Any idea?
