I've been using a hand-me-down arc welder for the last few years which served me well. Saturday smoked came out of it and soon it kind of died. I thought the electricity tripped, but it did not. I later found that the power light on the welder is still shining very dim, but that is the only sign of life. I doubt it is fixable.

So now I'm looking at purchasing a new arc welder. I like these small portable ones. I weld maybe once a year, small projects, maybe an hour or two off and on type jobbies. Usually 1.6 - 3mm steel.
I'm pathetic at welding and usually spend half my time closing up burnt holes. I have learned to master a grinder though.

So I'm looking at adverts and seeing specifications, but I don't know what to look for.
Will the following serve my need, or do I need a higher amp? I see there are 160 and 200 amp units available as well.

MAC AFRIC 145AMP WELDER
Mac-Afric 145Amp Welder
220V
60% Duty Cycle
Current Range: 20 - 200Amps
Efficiency: 85%
Power Factor: 0,7
L=30,5  W=13,5  and  H=26 cm (Approx)
LIGHT WEIGHT.    PORTABLE

Your input will be greatly appreciated.
