I went 'bikeless' for around 15 years but decided to try it again after my employer moved much further from my house.  For the past 2 weeks I travelled between Kemptonpark and Irene in peak traffic.  The roads and traffic came as a hell of a shock.  I used the same roads before '95 to travel to Midrand (Pta Road past Oakmoor station, Olifantsfontein double road...).  It really changed into a jungle now.  The first day by car took 1 hour.  The rest of the 2 weeks by KLR took around 35 minutes.  Last tank fuel consumption was 26.7 km/l!  This makes travelling by car a senseless option except maybe for safety.

I find it difficult not to take chances when traffic is slow and/or congested. How do you guys cope?

Thanks for this very informative site and the Kempton Wild Dog (forgot his id) who pulled me over to ask about my wheels and told me about this site.
