Will increasing the weight of the bar ends not act as a bit of a steering damper, making it easier to ride on loose surfaces such as sand? The amount of torque needed to turn the steering will be increased, thus making it more "difficult" for the terrain to turn the steering through the front wheel. The rider rarely turns the steering rapidly, which means the increase in bar end weight should not affect him much.
