Batery life expectancy on GS 650?

How long should a batery last? I own a 06 model and batery is still 100%, but i heard that if the batery runs down (for what ever reason) you are stuck - jump start might help depending on condition of batery, but otherwise a replacement is necessary to get you back on the road again. Price of a new batery?
