Bike
Yamaha XT600
Hi guys

My 6V battery on my XT500 keeps on running down. I thought it was maybe getting a bit old, so I replaced it with a brand new one, only to have that one run down within two days aswell. What gives?

I believe that the battery on the XT500 is for tail light and flickers only? The headlight is powered directly by the coil as I discovered after blowing numerous globes, because the bike was not fitted with a voltage regulator when it was rebuilt. I have since fitted a regulator and that has solved my headlight problem, but I am still sitting with the battery running down problem.

My question is, is the same coil that generates power to my headlight also responsible for charging my battery. If so, why is it not charging, when clearly it is generating power?

Or, is something else responsible for charging the battery? What test can I conduct to see if it is in fact doing its job?

I would appreciate any advice that you guys can give me in this regard please!
