I have 2002 BMW Dakar 650, and there is a loud mechanical “cluck” noise coming from the starter area. The noise is primarily heard when 1) engaging the starter motor, and the engine does not fire up on the first or second attempt, or 2) when I stop the engine ( it sounds like something breaking in the engine!). I have read that it could be the starter clutch (sprag clutch), but how can I be sure without taking off the side cover and removing the rotor etc..? Could it be timing chain related?
