A few weeks ago did a trip to Kimberly and loved the area there. From Kimberley did a round trip back via Colesburg , Ladybrand, Clarence, Harismith JHB in one day. It works out at around 850K. I loved the ride back but found the wind protection on the Dakar got to this old body. The Dakar cruises nicely at 130-140 loaded and it suits my riding style. I’m never in a big rush. Pushing it you can do 150-to 160 speedo speed but then you are fighting the sway a bit. So I thought to protect this old body a bit I will upgrade to 800 gs adventure. BMW have a subsidy deal at the moment you can get a brand new one for R135-139 depends on the dealer. I was not very impressed with the 800 adventure. Yes there is a lot more power than the Dakar and has abs but I found with the way they designed the air flow from the engine my right leg got stuffing hot and the other benefits don’t justify R135k for me. Then I took the demo 1200 gs Trophy for a test ride with 3000k on the clock was offered it for R149K. It’s a scaled down version of the 1200 gs with less electronics. The power blew my mind but once you add the price of crash bars and a few extras we back to around R170k. This would mean I have to sell my Dakar and if I get R35k I would still have to borrow another R40k to make the shortfall of my R100k savings. I don’t do well with borrowing and I love my Dakar. I have decided to rather in January/February look for a low mileage 1200 gs for around R90- R100k and use it for the long trips and keep the Dakar for short trips. To complicate the mater just been offered a 1150 gs with 30k on the clock in mint condition full service history. Now to decide what to do..... ???
