Pack Dog
The two of us- GSlaaitie and I- decided to take our new trailies on their maiden voyage... 8) (26 and 27 December 2011)
After caucusing on whether we should take tents or money ... we opted for number 3- FAMILY. My uncle lives on a farm en-route to Swaziland (±15km from Carolina). This proved the wiser of the options because we encountered rain every day- a warm bath, hot grub and a bed awaited after each day’s drenching.
We decided to keep the RR short on words and let the pics do the talking. It must be mentioned though that the pass from Barberton to the Josefsdal border post, and for that matter the patch of gravel from Josefsdal to Pigspeak is a must ... definitely the longest, least congested and fun ride we have had in a while- we stopped half way through for a breather. Just be on the lookout for gravel/debris that has been washed onto the road, especially on some of the tight corners...
Day One
Off to meet GSlaaitie in Hendrina
Coffee in Carolina
Rain awaits just before Barberton
As we entered Barberton
Lunch at Barberton’s Wimpy
Unknowingly the pass lurked in the background
Well deserved break halfway
Unfortunately the nicer the ride, the lesser the photos
At the Josefsdal border post- SA side
Swaziland side
Some nostalgic pics-deserted homestead between Josefsdal and Pigspeak
Gravel portion- CHECK! ...
Between Pigspeak and Oshoek border post the road is quite nice- interesting bridge that one passes
We were in a rush thinking that the border post will close at 17h00- its open until 22h00
Oshoek:
The sleeping border patrol were highly p’ed off because we photographed their inactivity
Close to Chrissiesmeer
My uncle’s farmhouse aka Hotel for the night
Day Two
Coffee at Lydenburg’s Wimpy
Rain lurking at Long Tom pass- was not an enjoyable ride in the end.... rain and cars and the pass didn’t gel
Wet after the pass
We decided to take one of SAPPI’s gravel “detours” just before Sabie... wise choice
The Woodsman in Sabie
Between Sabie and Pelgrims
Slippery when wet!!!!
Between Pelgrims and Lydenburg- it was a WET day!!!
Dullstroom
GSlaaitie heading off to Margate
We only had two days- it was enough to put our new toys through their paces
