Crash Bars Useful or Not?

I have bought a KLR with the view to doing some entry level over-landing. A few people have recommended crash bars. What I canâ??t workout is their purpose exactly. Is it to protect the bikes mechanics, the fairings or the riders legs? Anyone have any comments regarding the use and usefullness of crash bars?
