Foam for camera equipment

I have a standard BMW plastic top box into which I want to put foam to protect my camera equipment.  Waht foam would be best for shock absorbsion?  The thick foam mattress type, or that compressed high density stuff.  The current back-pack camera bag fits inside the top box but has to be removed each time the camera needs to put away and taken out again - a mission.
