Hey guys...

I'm leaving the UK in 10 weeks to ride to Cape Town by myself.  I wasn't planning on taking a GPS at all - how can you get lost -- you just keep going South... until you can't go any more... THEN YOU'RE THERE!

Unfortunately I discovered there's a few people who actually worry about me  (can you believe it!) -- and they are very, very anxious that perhaps I should take a GPS... and something that can transmit my whereabouts.

(Secretly I think its just so they can be sure not to be around when I get to them!)

ANYWAYS -- I have found several systems that transmit your GPS data... but all of them use GSM / GPRS (cellular networks).

Since 90% of Africa is NOT covered, there's FAT CHANCE that any data will ever be transmitted.

What to do?

(PS:  I did try and suggest smoke signals, but was told not to be flippant... global warming is bad enough.)
