GS 1150 ADV FAULTY ODOMETER and TRIP METER - PLEASE ADVISE

Just been on a trip during which the trip meter and odometer packed up but the speedometer still works.  Took the bike in to Auto Alpina who teels me I will have to buy a complete new unit and one cannot repair the mechanism which I am sure is just a little gear or the like that has worne.

Question, can one NOT repair the thing and is  a new unit @ R2058.76 the only way ?
