Hi Fender Conversion

I'm looking at doing a hi fender conversion on my 990 for an upcoming trip. I have a fender from a 690 (I think) but the brake lines are too narrow for the fender to fit through. My question is, can I just pry them apart and fit the fender, perhaps removing the plastic bracket that holds the brake lines to the yoke? What did you do?
