Keeping camera safe on a long trip

Have a Canon Q1X that I would like to use on a long trip. Too big and heavy  to keep in my jacket pocket, and worried about damage if kept in a tankbag.

Cannot find a camera bag with snug fit. Your advice appreciated. Have been looking at Pelican Peli Case 1120, but looks bulky and cumbersome.......

Any advice?
