A friend wanted a KTM 300 XC-W engine fitted into a Suzuki RMZ250F frame, so
I did a deal with him for the KTM bike, minus the parts he needed for the swop.
My son had out grown his Yamaha TTR230, so the 230 engine went into the KTM.
Frame all cut up
Getting everything lined up
I have done quite a few engine swops in other bike frames before, starting with my Suzuki AS50,
fitted with a B120 engine. Another was a DT175 engine into a YZ85 for a friends wife. Fitted a
Honda CR500 engine into a alloy CRF250, plus built two KX500 engines into KX250F alloy frames.
The fitting of the TTR230 engine into the KTM was the most work I have done on a engine
Conversion. Biggest problem was the 230 engine still has the casing were the kickstart
Would have gone and got in way of the swingarm and rear brake lever. The frame tubes under
Engine had to be lowered about 50mm.
Getting the swingarm to clear the engine
In the end, everything worked out well and the only thing needed to change on my first ride
Was reposition the gear lever higher. I used the bike 4 times off road and so far very happy
With it. It not fast, but then I don't want it to be, but in the steep rocky hills it works very well.
Still to make is a front number board to fit my tool bag. Things I would like to change is move
The foot rests back, to lighten the front end when standing. The KTM swingarm is 60mm longer
Than the TTR swingarm and with running trials tyres, that have a high profile, the axle has to be
a further 20mm back.
The out come, simple air cooled, carburettor, old school engine, now with suspension and good brakes.
