Cape Town - There may be some good news next year for motorcyclists who make use of toll roads, the Freedom Front Plus said on Monday.

"Motorcyclists may possibly be given a category of their own and will then be liable to pay less toll fees," the party said in a statement.

This follows a written reply the party received from Transport Minister Jeff Radebe to a Parliamentary question.

Noting that vehicle tolls are determined by weight and motorcycles do not have a category of their own, Radebe said in his reply that "a separate category for motorcycles is under consideration as part of the Open Road Tolling (ORT) system to be introduced in 2010".

FF Plus transport spokesperson Pieter Groenewald welcomed the proposal.

"It is unfair that motorcyclists pay the same fares as ordinary motorists... Motorcycles are much lighter than cars, but have to pay the same fees as those for cars.

"The Freedom Front Plus... will continue to interact with the minister on this matter to ensure that motorcycles are regarded as a category of their own and will then have to pay less for toll fees," he said.
