Lowering a 990 Adventure S

I am quite tall but only the balls of my feet touch the ground making it a problem if I become unballanced doing slow manovers or u turns and have ended up in heap on the ground. I have a gel seat on which made it a bit lower but after sitting on a 2008 990 I could put both my feet on the ground. I love the bike and 20mm odd would make a big difference so has anyone out there managed to lower their bike and how did they do it?
