Last week, my mate Greg Miller and I took 3 days to scout some routes for a planned event in the Northern Cape and West Coast.

We left on Wednesday morning on 990 Adv and 990 S with as little luggage as possible and rough idea of a route in mind. Our first night accommodation was booked at Kamieskroon Hotel and fortunately we asked them to keep dinner just in case we arrived after 8pm, which we did.

Our route from Cape Town  (compliments of Greg) took us on an extensive tour through D'urbanvillle and eventually on to Ceres where we had a much needed brunch. We then headed up Gydo pass, through the Cedarberg and Wupperthal for a quick fuel & drinks stop. With Greg stopping at every opportunity to take Photo's, by the time we reached Nieuwoudtville at 16:30, we were a little behind schedule.

We pushed hard in the direction of Kamieskroon and managed to cover 160 of the 280km to Kamieskroon before dark and still take a couple of pics. A warm dinner, cold beers and very comfortable bed awaited us.

Day two we headed out for Skilpad, the start of the Caracal EcoRoute, the real reason for our trip. After reading this article earlier in the week, we were fired up to go and scout the route for another RAW type event. As it turns out the riding was a lot easier than expected and after 200km's we had to opt out and head down to Garies for Fuel. Still an awesome ride, with fantastic scenery and challenging conditions. (https://www.northerncape.org.za/news/article/50/)

From Garies we returned to Groenrivier and headed down the coast to Lutzville where we arrived (after taking a small tumble and cracking only one Rib) unannounced at the Lutzville Hotel shortly after 8 pm. Fortunately they had room and a great dinner and a lot more beer was consumed.

Day Three we continued down the coast through Strandfontein, Doring Baai, Lamberts, Elands and refueled at Veldrif. trying to stay off tar, we continued down the railway lines all the way through darling and eventually arrived at Blue Peter, Cape Town for the traditional Loop Dop.

An awesome trip of approximately 1700km's mostly offroad in 3 days. Greg is an amazing photographer, check out his photo story here:
