Sales of new motorcycles and quads in South Africa to the end of November 2007 were down by 11.2 percent from the same period in 2006 at 38 574 with motorcycles accounting for 26 433 units (up 6.7 percent) and quads down 34 percent to 12 141.

Commercial bikes showed by far the best growth in the motorcycle sector, agricultural bikes showed an increase of close to 20 percent and speciality sales were still growing.

Scooter sales were down again - by 5.4 percent - but sales of road bikes larger than 800cc and cruisers grew by 12.6 and 14.4 percent respectively.

The following figures cover total sales for 2007, including November:

Trail 151cc+: 4216 - up 1.5%.
Off-road: 3206 - up 4.3%
Road 800cc+: 3148 - up 12.6%.
0-150cc: 2676 - down 11.7%.
Competition: 2649 - up 20.8%.
Scooters: 2492 - down 5.4%.
Commercial: 2281 - up 38.7%.
Road 151-800cc: 1990 - down 1.8%.
Cruiser: 1545 - up 14.4%.
Speciality: 1077 - up 17.6%.
Agricultural: 1053 - up 19.9%.

Quads
The overall quad market fell further with retail sales down 34.9 percent. The recreational (down 46.7 percent) and speciality sectors (down 48.3 percent) were particularly hard hit.
